Chinese Ambassador Offers Condolences to Earthquake Victims’ Families in Vanuatu

Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang on Wednesday visited the families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the recent devastating earthquake in Vanuatu. During his visit, Ambassador Li expressed deep condolences to the victims and extended heartfelt sympathy to their families. He assured them that the Chinese embassy would provide all necessary assistance during this challenging time.

“The embassy stands with you,” Ambassador Li said, emphasizing the commitment to support those affected. He also urged the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to take prompt and effective measures for post-disaster arrangements, highlighting the importance of swift action in the aftermath of such tragedies.

Vanuatu was struck by a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and injuring over 200 people. The disaster was further compounded when a subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake hit the region on December 22, causing extensive damage to infrastructure and hampering relief efforts.

In response to the crisis, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to assist in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team arrived on Monday and is tasked with conducting scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, performing safety assessments, and investigating potential secondary disasters.

The collaborative efforts underscore the strong ties between China and Vanuatu, as both nations work together to rebuild and ensure the safety of the island’s residents. The assistance from China is expected to bolster the recovery process and provide much-needed expertise in disaster management.
