Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang Visits Earthquake Victims’ Families in Vanuatu

Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang on Wednesday visited the families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the recent devastating earthquake in Vanuatu. The ambassador expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and extended heartfelt sympathy to their families, assuring them of the embassy’s full support during this difficult time.

“We stand with you in solidarity and grief,” Li said during his visit. “The embassy will offer all necessary assistance to help you navigate through this challenging period.”

Ambassador Li also emphasized that the embassy has urged the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to take swift and effective measures to address post-disaster arrangements, ensuring that aid reaches those most affected.

Vanuatu was struck by a powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and injuring over 200 people. The seismic event caused widespread damage to infrastructure, leaving countless residents homeless and in urgent need of assistance. Just days later, on December 22, a subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake rocked the region, exacerbating the devastation and hampering relief efforts.

In response to the natural disaster, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to assist in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, perform safety assessments, and investigate potential secondary disasters. Their expertise aims to support Vanuatu in rebuilding and enhancing resilience against future earthquakes.

The collaborative efforts between China and Vanuatu highlight the importance of international cooperation in the face of natural calamities. As recovery efforts continue, the affected communities in Vanuatu look towards rebuilding their lives with the support of global partners.
