In the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck Vanuatu this December, Chinese Ambassador Li Minggang visited the families of Chinese nationals who lost their lives in the natural disaster. On Wednesday, Ambassador Li expressed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, assuring them of the Chinese embassy’s unwavering support during this difficult time.
“We stand with you in grief and solidarity,” Ambassador Li conveyed to the families. “The embassy is committed to providing all necessary assistance to help you navigate through this challenging period.”
He also emphasized that the embassy has urged the Vanuatu government and relevant authorities to implement swift and effective measures for post-disaster recovery. The ambassador’s visit highlights China’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens abroad and its role in international humanitarian efforts.
Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific, was rocked by a 7.3-magnitude earthquake on December 17, resulting in at least 14 fatalities and over 200 injuries. The seismic activity did not cease there; a subsequent 6.1-magnitude quake on December 22 caused further destruction, damaging infrastructure and exacerbating the plight of the affected communities.
In response to the crisis, China dispatched a team of four technical specialists to Vanuatu to assist in recovery efforts. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the team will conduct scientific examinations of building structures in severely affected areas, perform safety assessments, and investigate potential secondary disasters.
The collaborative efforts between China and Vanuatu aim to accelerate the recovery process and strengthen resilience against future natural disasters. The expertise provided by the Chinese specialists is expected to play a crucial role in rebuilding and ensuring the safety of the local population.
