China Establishes AI Standardization Committee to Propel Industry Growth

China has taken a significant step in advancing its artificial intelligence (AI) industry by establishing a technical committee dedicated to AI standardization. Announced by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Monday, the new committee is set to play a pivotal role in formulating and revising industrial standards for AI-related sectors.

Overseen by the MIIT, this is the first such technical committee established by the ministry, marking a new phase in the standardization of China’s burgeoning AI sector. The MIIT highlighted in an online statement that the committee’s creation is part of broader efforts to accelerate the development of the AI industry and empower new industrialization across the nation.

The move aligns with decisions made at China’s Central Economic Work Conference held in early December, which emphasized the need to launch an “AI-plus” initiative and nurture industries of the future. By standardizing AI technologies and practices, China aims to foster innovation, enhance competitiveness, and ensure sustainable growth in this critical field.

According to data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, China’s core AI industry reached an impressive scale of 578.7 billion yuan (approximately $79.3) in 2023. This growth is supported by a thriving ecosystem of 4,482 enterprises, underscoring the country’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI development.
