On Tuesday, China firmly rejected recent accusations from the U.S. Department of the Treasury regarding a cyberattack allegedly orchestrated by “Chinese government-backed hackers.” The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, addressed the claims during a regular press briefing, denouncing them as groundless and lacking in evidence.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury reported on Monday that its computer security systems had been breached earlier this month, allowing unauthorized access to certain unclassified documents. The department attributed the breach to hackers purportedly supported by the Chinese government.
Responding to these allegations, Mao Ning reiterated China’s longstanding position against all forms of cyberattacks. “China has always opposed all forms of hacker attacks and condemns the dissemination of false information against China for political purposes,” she stated.
The spokesperson emphasized the importance of basing such serious accusations on concrete evidence rather than speculation. She urged the United States to refrain from making unfounded claims that could harm bilateral relations.
