Shanghai, China — China’s first domestically built large cruise ship, Adora Magic City, has marked a significant milestone by completing 84 voyages in 2024. Logging over 600,000 inbound and outbound visits in its first year of commercial operation, the vessel has swiftly become a beacon of the nation’s burgeoning cruise industry.
The majestic ship embarked on its maiden voyage on January 1, quickly capturing the hearts of tourists and securing an impressive 40 percent share of China’s international cruise market this year. On Sunday, over 3,000 eager passengers boarded the ship at the Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal for a festive six-day New Year trip, signaling the vessel’s sustained popularity.
Stretching 323.6 meters in length with a gross tonnage of 135,500 tonnes, Adora Magic City boasts 2,125 guest rooms capable of accommodating up to 5,246 passengers, along with a dedicated crew of around 1,300. The construction of this floating marvel was a collaborative effort involving over 1,000 domestic and international manufacturers, reflecting a highly integrated industrial chain and a high degree of internationalization often associated with the cruise industry, aptly dubbed “the golden industry that floats.”
Looking ahead, anticipation builds as a second Chinese-built large cruise ship is slated for delivery by the end of 2026. This new vessel is expected to commence international journeys from Guangzhou City in 2027, further solidifying China’s commitment to expanding its presence in the global cruise market.
The cruise economy in China is witnessing a steady recovery, bolstered by favorable policies and a resurgent global market. Key policies implemented this year include a visa-free entry initiative introduced in May for foreign tourist groups arriving on cruise ships at any of China’s coastal cruise ports. Additionally, new regulations unveiled in June have streamlined the replenishment of supplies for international cruises docking at Chinese ports.
Market analysts highlight the cruise economy’s crucial role in expanding domestic demand, unlocking consumption potential, and cultivating new economic drivers. The government’s targeted efforts to boost the industry are expected to spur further growth, attracting business professionals, investors, and cultural explorers alike to China’s dynamic cruise offerings.
