China’s rural sporting events, the Village Super League and Village BA, have taken center stage in 2024, redefining the landscape of grassroots sports and sparking economic revitalization in rural areas. From March to October, these unique competitions captivated audiences nationwide, and for the first time, were broadcast live in English by CGTN, highlighting their growing international appeal.
The Village BA, officially known as the Village Basketball Association, has deep roots in the local Miao ethnic group’s “June 6th” celebrations. Earning the affectionate nickname “Cun BA,” the event skyrocketed in popularity after going viral with 1.5 billion views in 2022, soaring to an astonishing 55 billion views in 2023. This year, the third edition transformed Taipan Village into a bustling hub of sport and culture.
More than just a basketball tournament, the Village BA has become a cultural carnival that boosts the local economy. Organizers integrated local specialties into the event by awarding them as competition prizes, a strategy designed to attract tourists and stimulate sales. According to official data, the 2024 VBA led to a 32.12% increase in tourist trips and a 32.67% rise in tourism revenue for Taijiang County. From January to November, the area welcomed over 3.6 million visitors, generating an impressive 4.2 billion yuan in revenue.
Approximately 200 kilometers away in Rongjiang County, the Village Super League mirrored this success. Since its surge in popularity last year, this football extravaganza has garnered over 78 billion views online. The event attracted 11.69 million tourists and contributed 13.07 billion yuan to the county’s tourism revenue. Looking ahead, Rongjiang County is set to host the first national Village Super League event next year.
Organizers have ambitious plans to expand the league’s reach by hosting a World Cup-style competition for football enthusiasts from around the globe in 2028. By fostering international collaboration, they aim to establish the Village Super League as a new model for grassroots sports development and rural revitalization in China.
These events exemplify how sports can serve as a catalyst for economic growth and cultural exchange. By integrating athletics with local traditions and tourism, the Village Super League and Village BA are not only celebrating athletic prowess but are also breathing new life into rural communities across China.
