Jim Spear, an American designer and architect, has found his home in China for over four decades, living out a dream he nurtured since his youth.
In 1972, during U.S. President Richard Nixon’s historic visit to China, a young Jim was captivated by images of the Great Wall. He envisioned owning a house beneath this monumental symbol of Chinese history. In 1994, that vision became reality when he acquired a house in Mutianyu Village, nestled in the shadows of the Great Wall near Beijing.
Embracing his new surroundings, Jim embarked on a transformative journey. He initiated a renovation program, breathing new life into the local community. An abandoned primary school became a thriving restaurant, an art glass shop, and a gallery, fostering both cultural exchange and economic development.
In 2006, his passion for revitalization led him to Beigou Village, where he rented and renovated a disused glaze tile factory into a boutique hotel. This project not only preserved the historical essence of the site but also provided employment opportunities for local residents, blending traditional Chinese aesthetics with modern design.
