Zero-Carbon Parks: Leading the Way to a Sustainable Future in China and Beyond

As the world grapples with the pressing challenges of climate change, zero-carbon parks have emerged as innovative models for promoting green, low-carbon, sustainable, and high-quality development. In the context of global carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets, these parks are becoming crucial hubs for achieving environmental goals.

At the Central Economic Work Conference in December, Chinese leaders outlined economic priorities for 2025, placing green transition high on the agenda. Zero-carbon parks are at the forefront of this initiative, playing a vital role in China's “dual carbon” goals of peaking carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.

Pioneering Zero-Carbon Parks in China

Xiongan New Area

In north China’s Hebei Province, Xiongan New Area showcases major green projects that set the benchmark for zero-carbon development. A notable example is a new energy ecological park opened in June, featuring an integrated solar photovoltaic system alongside ground and air source heat pumps. Achieving the zero-carbon building standard, the park utilizes a smart low-carbon management system aiming to reduce annual carbon emissions by 10,000 tonnes.

Tianjin Port

Tianjin Port exemplifies the integration of advanced technologies to enhance environmental protection. Located in north China, the port has achieved green energy self-sufficiency throughout its production processes, with electricity generated by wind turbines and photovoltaic plants. The zero-carbon smart wharves are a testament to this green focus, boasting wind and solar energy systems with a total installed capacity of 78 megawatts, generating 180 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. Additionally, electric charging stations for heavy trucks have been installed to promote sustainable transportation.

CRRC Zero-Carbon Industrial Park

In Zhuzhou, central China’s Hunan Province, the CRRC Zero-Carbon Industrial Park was officially completed on December 26. By utilizing low-carbon technologies such as waste heat recovery and integrating solar energy storage and charging systems, the park reduces energy consumption in single-product production by 12 percent. With over 50 percent of energy coming from clean sources, it stands as one of the leading green manufacturing parks in the country.

Global Examples of Zero-Carbon Parks

Masdar City, United Arab Emirates

Masdar City in Abu Dhabi is a pioneering example of zero-carbon urban development. The city relies heavily on renewable energy, with a 10 MW photovoltaic plant and rooftop solar panels supplying clean electricity. Energy-efficient building designs and passive cooling systems reduce energy consumption by over 50 percent. An autonomous electric transport system eliminates vehicle emissions, and smart grid technology optimizes energy distribution and storage. Additionally, treated wastewater is reused, conserving valuable resources.

BedZED, United Kingdom

The BedZED (Beddington Zero Energy Development) in London blends residential and business spaces within a zero-carbon framework. Solar panels generate renewable electricity, while super-insulated walls and triple-glazed windows minimize heating and cooling needs. Heat recovery systems further enhance efficiency. The development reduces resource consumption through rainwater harvesting and wastewater recycling, and provides electric vehicle charging points to encourage sustainable transportation. Buildings are constructed from locally sourced, low-carbon materials, emphasizing sustainability from construction to operation.
