China Launches First Type 076 Amphibious Assault Ship ‘Sichuan’

China launched its first Type 076 new-generation amphibious assault ship, the Sichuan, at a ceremony in Shanghai on Friday. Named after southwest China’s Sichuan Province, the vessel marks a significant step forward in the modernization of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

The Sichuan, designated with hull number 51, boasts a full-load displacement of over 40,000 tonnes. It features a dual-island superstructure and a full-length flight deck, incorporating advanced electromagnetic catapult and arrestor technologies. This allows the ship to carry a diverse range of aircraft, including fixed-wing planes, helicopters, and amphibious equipment.

Navy officials highlighted the ship’s role in enhancing the PLAN’s operational capabilities in far seas. As the latest addition to the navy’s fleet, the Sichuan is expected to play a key role in advancing amphibious combat readiness and multi-dimensional landing operations.

Following its launch, the ship will undergo a series of planned tests, including equipment commissioning, mooring tests, and sea trials, before entering active service.

The launch of the Sichuan continues the navy’s recent expansion and modernization efforts. In 2019, the PLAN unveiled its first 075-class amphibious assault ship, the Hainan, which officially entered service in April 2021. Two additional Type 075 ships, the Guangxi and the Anhui, have since been commissioned, underscoring China’s commitment to bolstering its naval capabilities.
