China’s Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang issued a stern warning to the Taiwan authorities on Thursday, stating that U.S. weaponry will not be the “magic straw” to save a drowning man, but rather will become easy targets on the battlefield.
Zhang made these remarks during a regular press conference in response to reports that the first batch of M1A2T battle tanks purchased by Taiwan from the United States has arrived on the island.
The spokesperson cautioned that seeking independence by soliciting U.S. support is doomed to failure, and that resorting to force to resist reunification leads nowhere. He emphasized that attempts to impede reunification are futile.
Zhang urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, honoring its commitment not to support “Taiwan independence.” He called on the U.S. to immediately stop arming Taiwan and cease actions that undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
“The People’s Liberation Army will comprehensively enhance its combat readiness and ability to fight and win, firmly crushing any ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist schemes and foreign interference,” Zhang added.
