Chinese Defense Ministry spokesperson Zhang Xiaogang issued a stern warning to the Taiwan authorities on Thursday, stating that U.S. weaponry will not be the “magic straw” to save a drowning man but are merely easy targets on the battlefield.
At a regular press conference, Zhang responded to reports of the first batch of M1A2T battle tanks purchased by Taiwan from the United States arriving on the island. He emphasized that seeking independence by soliciting U.S. support is doomed to failure and that resorting to force to resist reunification leads nowhere.
Zhang urged the United States to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques. He called on the U.S. side to earnestly honor its commitment of not supporting “Taiwan independence,” immediately cease arming Taiwan, and stop making dangerous moves that undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
“The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will comprehensively improve its combat readiness, enhance its capability to fight and win, and firmly smash any ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist plot and foreign interference,” Zhang declared.
