China is set to face Brazil in their opening match at the United Cup in Perth, Australia, this Friday. Men’s singles standout Zhang Zhizhen is eager to showcase his skills on the international stage.
Zhang, currently ranked 45th in the world, announced his arrival in Perth via social media on Monday. He is scheduled to compete against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro in men’s singles on Friday and will take on Germany’s Alexander Zverev next Monday.
In the women’s singles, Gao Xinyu will represent China and may team up with Zhang in mixed doubles if required. Gao was recently added to the roster, replacing Zheng Qinwen, who withdrew from the tournament to concentrate on the upcoming Australian Open.
The United Cup features 18 teams divided into six groups competing in Sydney and Perth. The six group leaders, along with the two best-performing runners-up, will advance to the elimination phase.
Germany claimed the title last January, defeating Poland 2-1 in a thrilling final.
