China Explores ‘One Country, Two Systems’ Framework for Taiwan Reunification

China has announced plans to actively explore a ‘One Country, Two Systems’ solution for Taiwan, emphasizing a commitment to peaceful reunification. Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, addressed the initiative during a press conference on Wednesday.

“We will continue to unite with compatriots in Taiwan and actively explore solutions to advance peaceful reunification,” Chen stated. He emphasized that the approach would fully consider Taiwan’s realities, the perspectives of people from all walks of life on both sides of the Taiwan Straits, and the interests and sentiments of Taiwan people.

Chen expressed confidence that the residents of Taiwan would develop a better understanding of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ framework. “This solution will play its full role as compatriots on both sides work together toward peaceful reunification,” he added.

The announcement comes as China marks the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return. Chen highlighted Macao’s success under the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ model, noting its “distinctive institutional strengths and strong vitality.” He stated that Macao’s achievements demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the framework, which is well-received by the people.

The ‘One Country, Two Systems’ principle was originally formulated to facilitate the reunification of China by allowing regions like Hong Kong and Macao to maintain their own economic and administrative systems while being part of China. The proposal for Taiwan suggests a similar approach, tailored to the island’s unique circumstances.

The initiative aims to address long-standing tensions across the Taiwan Strait by seeking common ground and mutual understanding. Analysts suggest that this move could open new avenues for dialogue, although it is expected to be met with cautious consideration by Taiwan authorities.
