Tianjin Bohai Bank has etched its name in volleyball history by becoming the first Chinese team to reach the final of the Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) Women’s Club World Championship. In a thrilling semifinal match held in Hangzhou on Saturday, Tianjin triumphed over Brazil’s Dentil Praia Clube with a 3-1 victory.
Entering the tournament as the third-place finisher from the previous edition, Tianjin carried with them a renewed confidence. Despite initial injury concerns for captain Li Yingying, a period of rest revitalized the star spiker. Li’s significant contribution was instrumental in Tianjin securing an impressive five-game winning streak to conclude the regular season in the China Volleyball League.
While fatigue from their domestic campaign posed challenges, Tianjin’s experience cultivated resilience and a steadfast determination to overcome adversity. The team advanced through the group stage of the Club World Championship without dropping a single set, greatly boosting morale and strengthening the trust between the players and head coach Chen Fang.
In the semifinals against the tenacious Dentil Praia Clube, Tianjin focused intently on service receptions, creating ample scoring opportunities. Captain Li Yingying rose to the occasion, delivering a stellar performance with a match-high 32 points, 10 of which came in the pivotal first set.
Although Tianjin’s momentum waned in the third set, allowing their opponents to avoid a sweep, they quickly regained composure in the fourth. Demonstrating unwavering determination, Tianjin denied Dentil Praia any chance of a comeback, sealing their victory with set scores of 25-23, 25-21, 24-26, and 25-22.
“We knew it was going to be a tough match, but our team showed great spirit and unity,” said Li Yingying after the match. “Advancing to the final is a dream come true, and we’re excited to represent China on this stage.”
Tianjin Bohai Bank’s historic achievement not only marks a significant milestone for the club but also represents a proud moment for Chinese volleyball on the international arena. The team now sets its sights on the championship match, where they will aim to bring home the prestigious title.
