Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday reaffirmed his commitment to the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, outlining his expectations for the newly inaugurated government of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR). This renewed focus opens doors for deeper cooperation between Macao and Portugal, according to Alexandre Leitão, the Portuguese consul-general in Macao.
In an exclusive interview with CGTN reporter Chen Yuan, Leitão expressed optimism about the prospects for enhanced collaboration. “President Xi’s support provides a strong foundation for Macao to continue flourishing as a bridge between China and Portugal,” he said. “We see significant opportunities in areas such as trade, culture, and education.”
Leitão highlighted the historical ties between Portugal and Macao, emphasizing that the shared heritage positions the SAR uniquely for fostering international partnerships. “Macao has always been a meeting point of East and West,” he noted. “With the new government’s commitment to progress, we can build upon our longstanding relationship to achieve mutual benefits.”
The consul-general also mentioned potential initiatives, including joint economic projects and cultural exchanges. “We are exploring various avenues to strengthen our cooperation,” Leitão added. “The goal is to enhance understanding and prosperity for both our peoples.”
As Macao enters a new chapter under its recently inaugurated government, the reaffirmation of the “One Country, Two Systems” policy by President Xi sets a positive tone for the future. Both local and international stakeholders are watching closely as opportunities for deeper cooperation emerge.
