Chinese Envoy Urges U.S. to Cease Provoking Confrontation Over Ukraine

A senior Chinese diplomat has called on the United States to halt its “senseless blame game” and stop provoking confrontation regarding the Ukraine crisis. Speaking at the United Nations Security Council on Friday, Geng Shuang, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, urged all parties to engage in peace talks and work towards a political settlement.

“The crisis in Ukraine continues to drag on, and the fighting has shown no signs of abatement,” Geng stated. He emphasized that while weapons may influence the course of the war, they cannot bring about lasting peace. “We call on all parties to the conflict to start peace talks at an early date and urge the international community to actively create conditions to this end,” he added.

Geng highlighted China’s ongoing efforts to promote peace since the conflict began, noting that “Russia, Ukraine, countries of the Global South, and many European nations have welcomed China’s role and contribution to resolving the Ukraine crisis.” He criticized the United States for being the only country to “turn a blind eye” to these efforts and for spreading “false information.”

“China did not create the Ukraine crisis, nor is it a party to the crisis,” Geng asserted. “The United States cannot, on the one hand, hope that China will play a greater role in ending the war, while on the other hand, keep discrediting China’s efforts for peace and continue to slander and put pressure on China.”

He called for the U.S. to “stop its senseless blame game and its provocation of antagonism and confrontation.” Geng urged the United States to work collaboratively with China and other concerned countries to build solidarity, foster consensus, and create conditions conducive to a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis.
