China’s Red Cross Donates $100,000 to Earthquake-Hit Vanuatu

The Red Cross Society of China has provided $100,000 in emergency humanitarian cash assistance to Vanuatu following a devastating earthquake that struck the Pacific Island nation on Tuesday.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake rocked Vanuatu’s main island, toppling concrete buildings in the capital city of Port Vila and triggering landslides. Described by locals as a “violent, high-frequency vertical shake,” the quake has left at least 14 people dead and injured more than 200 others as buildings collapsed.

An initial tsunami warning issued after the quake has since been lifted, but the aftermath has left communities reeling. Rescue efforts are underway as authorities assess the extent of the damage.

“Today we have received $100,000 of emergency humanitarian cash assistance from the Red Cross Society of China, which will be handed over to Vanuatu on Saturday,” said Chinese Ambassador to Vanuatu Li Minggang, as reported by Xinhua news agency. “China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity based on the situation and the needs of Vanuatu.”

The Chinese embassy in Vanuatu is maintaining close contact with the government of Vanuatu to understand its rescue and relief needs and to provide timely support, according to Li.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with neighboring countries and organizations offering support to aid in recovery efforts.
