Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) John Lee on Thursday, emphasizing the need for Hong Kong and Macao to strive for greater accomplishments as the “One Country, Two Systems” framework enters a new stage.
The meeting took place in Macao, where Lee is attending the celebrations of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China. President Xi highlighted the importance of the two special administrative regions (SARs) learning from each other, strengthening exchanges and cooperation, and working together to create a brighter future.
“The country has high expectations for Hong Kong,” Xi said, expressing hope that Lee and the HKSAR government will govern firmly and prudently. He urged them to vigorously promote the economy, seek development, and strive to achieve new successes for Hong Kong.
Chief Executive John Lee affirmed his commitment to leading Hong Kong toward economic prosperity and development. “We will make every effort to effectively improve people’s livelihoods,” Lee said. He also emphasized Hong Kong’s active participation in the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and its intention to better integrate into the overall national development.
