Xi Jinping Commends Macao’s ‘Extraordinary’ Achievements Over Five Years

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday praised the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) for its remarkable achievements over the past five “extraordinary” years. Speaking at a welcome dinner hosted by the SAR government on the eve of the 25th anniversary of Macao’s return to China, Xi highlighted the progress made despite unprecedented global challenges.

“Against the backdrop of accelerating global transformations and the once-in-a-century pandemic, the fifth-term SAR government has rallied the people of all sectors in Macao to rise to the challenge,” Xi said. He lauded the region’s efforts in ensuring a steady economic recovery and achieving advancements across various fields.

Over the past five years, Macao has made significant strides in diversifying its economy and enhancing the well-being of its residents. Xi noted that the region’s political and social foundation, rooted in love for the Chinese nation and love for Macao, has become more solid and stronger. Additionally, Macao’s international influence and visibility have increased notably.

“The remarkable achievements are attributable to the full and faithful implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ policy, the vigorous support of the central government and the mainland, and the active involvement of the international community,” Xi remarked. He emphasized that the hard work and unity of the people of Macao under the leadership of the SAR government were key to these successes.

Looking ahead, Xi encouraged Macao to proactively align with national development strategies, such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area initiative, and to seek a larger role on the international stage. He urged the SAR to uphold the core values of love for the Chinese nation and love for Macao, embrace greater openness and inclusiveness, and attract talented individuals to build a better future for the region.

Xi also called on Macao to demonstrate stronger resolve and courage in reform and innovation, leveraging the institutional strengths of the “One Country, Two Systems” framework to break new ground in its development.

Ho Iat Seng, the outgoing Chief Executive of the SAR, expressed his commitment to contributing to China’s development and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. He conveyed his belief that the incoming Chief Executive, Sam Hou Fai, will lead the new government and all sectors of Macao to write a new chapter in the practice of “One Country, Two Systems” with Macao characteristics.
