President Xi Urges Deepening Rural Reform to Strengthen China’s Agriculture

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for intensified efforts to deepen rural reform and bolster China’s agricultural strength. Speaking at the annual central rural work conference held in Beijing on Tuesday and Wednesday, President Xi emphasized the critical role of agriculture in the nation’s development and the well-being of its people.

President Xi, who is also the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, highlighted the necessity of enhancing support systems to strengthen agriculture, benefit farmers, and enrich rural areas. He urged comprehensive advancement of rural revitalization, stressing the importance of ensuring stable production and supply of grain and other major agricultural products.

“Efforts should be made to create more channels for farmers to increase incomes, continuously consolidate and expand the achievements of poverty alleviation, and ensure that no large-scale lapsing or relapsing into poverty occurs,” Xi stated.

He called for solid initiatives to promote rural development and transform the countryside into a beautiful and harmonious place where people can live and work comfortably. President Xi also underscored the need for Party committees and governments at all levels to prioritize the development of agriculture and rural areas.

“We must accelerate the modernization of agriculture and rural areas, further consolidate the country’s agricultural foundation, bring greater prosperity to rural areas and farmers, and steadily advance toward the goal of building up China’s strength in agriculture,” he said.

The conference conveyed and studied President Xi’s instructions, discussing the draft opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on further deepening rural reform and steadily promoting all-around rural revitalization.

Participants at the conference emphasized the need to concentrate efforts on achieving tangible results in raising agricultural efficiency, injecting vitality into rural areas, and increasing farmers’ incomes. They called for resolute action to ensure national food security by enhancing the supply capacity of important agricultural products such as grain and developing new quality productive forces in agriculture according to local conditions.

The conference also highlighted the importance of pursuing coordinated progress in new urbanization and all-around rural revitalization. It urged comprehensive implementation of tasks to further deepen rural reform and to move forward with well-organized trials to extend rural land contracts by another 30 years upon the expiration of the second-round contracts.

President Xi’s call for deepening rural reform comes at a pivotal time as China continues to navigate economic challenges and strives to achieve sustainable development. His vision underscores the significance of agriculture in national prosperity and the imperative of ensuring the welfare of rural communities.
