President Xi Jinping Urges Hainan to Pioneer a New Era in Chinese Modernization

In a recent meeting with provincial officials, Chinese President Xi Jinping called on Hainan, China’s southernmost province, to forge ahead and contribute to a new chapter in the nation’s modernization efforts. Emphasizing Hainan’s strategic importance, Xi urged the province to capitalize on its unique strengths to advance China’s development goals.

President Xi, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made these remarks on Tuesday afternoon after reviewing work reports from the CPC Hainan provincial committee and the provincial government. He commended Hainan for its accomplishments across various sectors and laid out clear directives for its future work.

Highlighting Hainan’s strategic positioning, Xi encouraged the province to focus on becoming a pilot zone for comprehensive deepening of reform and opening-up, a national pilot zone for ecological conservation, an international tourism and consumption destination, and a service zone for major national strategies. He stressed the importance of aligning with these roles to enhance the province’s contribution to the nation’s progress.

Xi called for the development of a modern industrial system that leverages Hainan’s distinctive features and advantages. He urged efforts to strengthen and expand the industrial chains of leading industries such as tourism, modern services, high-tech sectors, and tropical high-efficiency agriculture. By optimizing and upgrading these industries, Hainan can enhance its economic vitality and competitiveness.

Furthermore, President Xi emphasized the need for solid advancement of reforms in key areas. He pointed out that Hainan should benchmark against international high-level economic and trade rules, promote systematic opening-up, and create a first-class business environment that is market-oriented, law-based, and internationalized. These steps are crucial for integrating Hainan more deeply into the global economy and for attracting both domestic and international investment.

President Xi’s directives signal a strong commitment to leveraging Hainan’s potential in advancing China’s modernization. As Hainan embraces these strategic initiatives, it stands to play a pivotal role in shaping the economic, ecological, and technological landscape of the region, offering new opportunities for investors, businesses, and the global community interested in China’s dynamic development.
