Hengqin Adopts Macao’s Elderly Care Model for Joyful Senior Living

‘An old person in a home is like a treasure of the family.’ This saying resonates deeply in Hengqin, where a pioneering initiative is bringing joy and community to its senior residents.

In 2019, the General Union of Neighborhood Associations of Macao extended its reach to Hengqin, introducing elderly care services modeled after those in Macao. At the heart of this endeavor is Lu Fengxuan, a native of Macao who brought her wealth of experience in ‘Macao-style’ elderly care to the community.

Under Lu’s guidance, Hengqin’s seniors are experiencing a vibrant and fulfilling later life. She has fostered a nurturing environment where elderly residents are encouraged to share their skills, engage in community activities, and contribute ideas for the development of their neighborhood.

‘It’s about more than just care,’ Lu explains. ‘It’s about creating a community where our elders feel valued and empowered.’

This initiative not only enhances the quality of life for Hengqin’s seniors but also positions the area as a pioneer in implementing ‘Macao-style’ elderly care services within China’s Greater Bay Area. It serves as a model for integrating elder care practices across regions, bridging cultural insights, and fostering interconnected communities.
