The China Coast Guard (CCG) has reported monitoring a Philippine civilian vessel delivering supplies to a grounded military ship at Ren'ai Jiao in the South China Sea. CCG spokesperson Liu Dejun briefed the media on Tuesday, detailing the recent interactions between the two nations in the contested waters.
According to Liu, with China's permission, the Philippines dispatched a civilian vessel on Thursday to supply its military ship illegally grounded on Ren'ai Jiao. “The CCG inquired about and verified the Philippine vessel’s activities and monitored them throughout the process,” Liu stated.
Ren’ai Jiao, known for its strategic significance, has been a focal point of maritime attention. The CCG’s actions highlight China’s ongoing efforts to assert its sovereignty over the area, referred to as part of China’s Nansha Qundao and surrounding waters.
Liu expressed a desire for continued cooperation between China and the Philippines. “We hope the Philippine side will honor its commitments, work together with China, and jointly manage the maritime situation,” he said, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in maintaining regional stability.
The CCG affirmed its commitment to enforcing law and safeguarding China’s rights in the region. “The CCG will continue to carry out law enforcement activities to safeguard rights in China’s Nansha Qundao and the surrounding waters, including Ren’ai Jiao,” Liu concluded.
