The Golden Promise 2024: Celebrating China-Cambodia Cultural Exchange

The golden lights of Phnom Penh’s iconic Chaktomuk Theater shimmered on Sunday evening as “The Golden Promise 2024,” a China-Cambodia cultural show, unfolded to celebrate the year of people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.

The glittering event brought together a troupe of Chinese artists from Wuxi City, East China’s Jiangsu Province, and a team of Cambodian artists from the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, showcasing a fusion of traditional songs, dances, and performances that highlighted the rich cultural heritage of both countries.

Distinguished guests including Cheam Yeap, First Vice President of Cambodia’s National Assembly, and Ek Sam Ol, President of the Cambodia-China Friendship Association, graced the occasion, underscoring the significance of cultural ties in strengthening bilateral relations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin expressed enthusiasm for the event, noting that it was part of joint activities to mark the China-Cambodia people-to-people exchange year 2024. “I believe that the audience could be deeply interested in Chinese culture and tradition through this cultural show,” he said.

Wang emphasized that the cultural show not only deepened cultural exchanges but also promoted the traditional friendship between China and Cambodia, fostering mutual understanding and goodwill.

During the two-hour performance, Chinese artists captivated the audience with traditional songs and dances, while Cambodian artists enchanted with the Royal Ballet—a UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage—and traditional music, creating a harmonious blend of artistic expression.

Audience members were enthralled by the performances. “The cultural show was amazing; all artists were highly professional and talented,” said Keo Sreylin, a 25-year-old civil servant at the Ministry of Tourism. “I like watching Chinese art performances because I’m keen to know more about China’s beautiful culture, tradition, and customs.”

Similarly, Sokun Povneath, a senior student at the National University of Management, shared his appreciation. “I liked the show because it was diverse and interesting, and I could learn a lot about the differences between Chinese and Cambodian cultures,” he said. “The artists from China performed well, and their gestures were vivid.”

“The Golden Promise 2024” serves as a cultural bridge, enhancing people-to-people connections and enriching the cultural tapestry of both nations. As the year of people-to-people exchanges continues, such events are expected to further strengthen the bonds between China and Cambodia.

The celebration at Chaktomuk Theater not only highlighted the artistic talents of both countries but also underscored the importance of cultural dialogue in fostering peaceful and prosperous relations in the region.
