Three Gorges Project Celebrates 30 Years of Power and Progress

The Three Gorges Project, the world’s largest hydropower undertaking, marked its 30th anniversary on Saturday, celebrating three decades of power generation and infrastructural achievements.

Since its inception, the project has generated over 1.7 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity. This monumental output is equivalent to saving 550 million tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.49 billion tonnes, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.

The project’s first hydropower generator unit became operational in July 2003, signifying a new era in sustainable energy production for the region. Over the years, the Three Gorges Project has demonstrated its multifaceted benefits, particularly in flood control. It has successfully intercepted floods nearly 70 times, safeguarding communities along the Yangtze River basin.

Beyond power generation and flood control, the project has significantly enhanced navigation on the Yangtze River. With a cumulative cargo throughput exceeding 2.1 billion tonnes, it has contributed an annual average economic benefit of 34.4 billion yuan (approximately $4.78 billion). This improvement in river navigation has bolstered trade and connectivity within the region.

The Three Gorges Project has also played a crucial role in water regulation. By supplementing water for the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River for 2,732 days, it has provided over 360 billion cubic meters of water, ensuring reliable drinking water supplies and supporting agricultural irrigation in key areas.

Environmental advancements have been a hallmark of the project’s legacy. The ecological environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir area has seen notable improvements. Daily sewage treatment capacity has increased by 1.58 million tonnes, significantly reducing pollution in the river. Additionally, forest and grass coverage in key areas have risen, with forest coverage rates surpassing 50 percent, enhancing soil and water conservation capabilities.

As the Three Gorges Project celebrates three decades of operation, it stands as a testament to ambitious engineering and its profound impact on economic and social development. Its contributions continue to support sustainable growth and environmental stewardship in the region.
