On December 15, the world unites to celebrate World Strengthened Immunity Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role of immunization in protecting communities against vaccine-preventable diseases. Established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1988, this global initiative was a response to the urgent need to eliminate polio—a disease that predominantly affects children under the age of five, leading to irreversible paralysis.
The significance of this day extends beyond commemorating efforts against polio; it emphasizes the collective action required to maintain high levels of immunity within populations and prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Vaccines remain one of the most cost-effective tools in achieving these goals, strengthening the body’s immune system to recognize and combat foreign pathogens effectively.
As the world approaches the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) in 2024, the impact of immunization programs becomes even more apparent. The WHO reports that over 154 million lives have been saved due to these efforts, with China playing a significant role in this global achievement.
Since the launch of its immunization program in 1978, China has made remarkable strides in public health. The country has prevented over 300 million cases of diseases such as polio, diphtheria, and hepatitis B. This transformation from a vaccine recipient to a leading donor highlights China’s commitment to not only protecting its own citizens but also contributing to global health initiatives.
In 2002, China incorporated the hepatitis B vaccine into its national childhood immunization program, achieving over 90% coverage among newborns. This proactive approach positioned China among the earliest nations to launch such comprehensive immunization initiatives.
Epidemiologist Feng Zijian, in an interview with China Media Group, emphasized the profound impact of vaccination rates on disease incidence. “Vaccination rates have led to a continuous decrease in disease incidence, with over 95% reduction in many targeted diseases,” he stated. He also highlighted that diphtheria has been virtually eliminated in China for nearly two decades.
China’s robust immunization program is further strengthened by supportive legislation and a comprehensive vaccine management system. The 2019 Vaccine Administration Law provides a solid legal foundation for industry regulation, ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccines distributed within the country. Following the implementation of the national immunization program, the incidence rate of seven out of fifteen targeted diseases in China’s expanded immunization program has decreased by more than 99% compared to pre-vaccination levels.
China’s journey in immunization reflects a broader narrative of global collaboration and commitment to public health. By investing in immunization programs and sharing its resources and expertise, China continues to contribute significantly to strengthening global immunity, safeguarding future generations from preventable diseases.
