Ensuring Prosperity and Stability in Macao
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) garrison stationed in Macao remains steadfast in its commitment to the prosperity and stability of the special administrative region, according to a military spokesperson on Friday.
Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, emphasized the garrison’s dedication to maintaining the trust of local residents and safeguarding Macao’s continued success. “Looking ahead, the PLA Macao Garrison will ensure its continued competence,” Wu stated.
25 Years of Service
The remarks were made in response to inquiries about the garrison’s achievements over the past 25 years. Deployed in 1999 following Macao’s return to China from Portuguese administration, the PLA troops have taken on critical defense responsibilities in the region.
Over the past quarter-century, the garrison has successfully fulfilled its duties, effectively safeguarding national sovereignty and security while contributing to Macao’s stability and prosperity.
Enhancing Combat Readiness
Consistently enhancing combat readiness through rigorous training and regular joint exercises, the garrison has bolstered its capability to respond promptly to potential threats. Wu noted that these efforts have strengthened the forces’ preparedness and operational effectiveness.
Community Engagement and Service
Beyond their military responsibilities, the PLA Macao Garrison has fostered strong ties with the local community. Each year, they open military camps to the public during the May Day holidays and host receptions on the founding anniversary of the PLA, extending goodwill to Macao residents.
The garrison actively participates in community service, including blood donation drives and disaster relief efforts. To date, approximately 1,000 officers and soldiers have engaged in disaster relief, and the garrison has provided flag-raising training to over 13,000 individuals. Their military museum has welcomed more than 157,000 visitors, strengthening the bond between the military and the community.
A Reputation Built on Discipline
Throughout their deployment, the garrison has operated in strict accordance with the law. Wu stressed, “It has strictly abided by regulations and discipline, earning a reputation as a strong and disciplined force in the hearts of the local people.”
