Chinese Ambassador Warns Against Underestimating China at USCBC Gala

Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng has cautioned that underestimating China is unwise and that attempts to contain the nation are destined to fail. Speaking at the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC) 2024 Gala Dinner in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday night, Xie emphasized China's steady economic trajectory and its commitment to high-quality development.

“We are fully capable of ensuring overall economic stability and forestalling risks,” Xie stated. “Our high-quality development is moving forward with vigor, and there is great potential for the positive momentum to last.”

Xie highlighted China's resilience, noting that the nation's economy has progressed significantly through “braving wind and rain.” He expressed confidence in achieving this year's growth targets and announced plans for more proactive and impactful macroeconomic policies in the coming year to address risks and external shocks.

“China will continue to be the top engine of global growth in the future. No force can muddy the ocean or stop its surging flow,” he remarked.

Addressing rising protectionism, Xie reaffirmed China's determination to deepen comprehensive reforms and expand high-standard opening up. He invited international businesses, including American companies, to share in China's development opportunities, advocating for the advancement of sound and steady China-U.S. economic and trade relations.

Xie criticized the use of tariffs as a weapon, warning that such measures would lead to isolation and missed opportunities. “Building a ‘small yard, high fence’ cannot stifle innovation and would only constrain oneself,” he said. “Shutting China out in the name of de-risking poses the real risk to global industrial and supply chains. And exploiting ‘national security’ as a convenient pretext for suppressing others is in itself causing insecurity.”

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of cooperation between China and the United States: “Only when China and the United States work together will both our countries and the world be safer and fare better.”
