In a powerful address at the U.S.-China Business Council’s (USCBC) 2024 Gala Dinner in Washington, D.C., Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng cautioned that underestimating China would be unwise and that doomsaying about the nation’s prospects is baseless.
“We are fully capable of ensuring overall economic stability and forestalling risks,” Ambassador Xie stated. “Our high-quality development is moving forward with vigor, and there is great potential for this positive momentum to last.”
Expressing confidence in China’s economic trajectory, Xie highlighted that the country is on a steady, sound, and upward path. “We are confident that we will accomplish this year’s growth target,” he said. “Next year, we will implement macroeconomic policies that are more proactive and impactful, preventing and resolving risks in key areas and mitigating external shocks.”
Ambassador Xie emphasized China’s role as a major driver of global economic growth. “China will continue to be the top engine of global growth in the future. No force can muddy the ocean or stop its surging flow,” he remarked.
Addressing rising protectionism, Xie reaffirmed China’s commitment to deepening comprehensive reforms and expanding high-standard opening up. “We will advance the sound and steady development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations and welcome international businesses, including American ones, to share in China’s development opportunities,” he said.
He warned that attempts to weaponize tariffs and build barriers would backfire. “Building a ‘small yard, high fence’ cannot stifle innovation and would only constrain oneself,” Xie cautioned. “Shutting China out in the name of de-risking poses real risks to global industrial and supply chains.”
Xie concluded by stressing the importance of cooperation between China and the United States. “Only when China and the United States work together will both our countries and the world be safer and fare better,” he asserted.
