China’s Defense Ministry announced on Friday that trials of the Fujian aircraft carrier are advancing smoothly, marking significant progress in the vessel’s development.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian addressed the media at a press conference, confirming that the trials are a standard part of the construction process. “Subsequent trials will be conducted as construction advances,” Wu stated, emphasizing the project’s alignment with planned timelines.
The update follows inquiries about the Fujian’s status after the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration issued traffic controls for large vessels entering the Yangtze River estuary in early December. Observers had speculated on the movements of the carrier based on these announcements.
The Fujian aircraft carrier, China’s first domestically designed and built carrier equipped with electromagnetic catapults, represents a significant milestone in the nation’s naval capabilities. It completed its first sea trials in May 2024, showcasing advancements in technology and engineering.
The continued progress of the Fujian is seen as a strategic enhancement of China’s naval power, contributing to the stability and security of regional maritime interests.
