Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has affirmed China’s support for Syria in its quest for peace and rebuilding through inclusive dialogue. Speaking at a joint press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty in Beijing on Friday, following the China-Egypt foreign ministers’ strategic dialogue, Wang emphasized China’s commitment to assisting Syria in finding a rebuilding plan that aligns with the wishes of its people.
“We support Syria in realizing peace at the earliest, implementing Security Council Resolution 2254, advancing the domestic political process in accordance with the principle of ‘Syrian-led, Syrian-owned,’ and finding a rebuilding plan through inclusive dialogue,” Wang stated.
As a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Wang highlighted China’s longstanding policy of friendship and cooperation with Syria. He noted that China respects Syria’s sovereignty and the choices of its people, and has never interfered in its internal affairs.
Wang expressed concern over the recent volatility in Syria, underscoring the need for the international community to safeguard Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He called on all nations to respect Syria’s ethnic and religious traditions and to support the Syrian people in making independent decisions.
“All countries should work together to extend a helping hand to Syria, push for the lifting of illegal unilateral sanctions imposed over the years, and ease its grave humanitarian situation,” Wang urged.
Addressing the broader turmoil in the Middle East, Wang Yi emphasized that the pressing task is to cease fire immediately, stop violence, and alleviate the humanitarian crisis. He advocated for a fundamental solution through political settlement, resuming dialogue and negotiation, and adhering to the principle of supporting self-determination while avoiding external interference.
The discussions between China and Egypt highlight Beijing’s active role in Middle Eastern affairs. Wang’s remarks reflect China’s broader foreign policy objectives of fostering peace, opposing terrorism and extremism, and supporting nations in determining their own futures without external imposition.
