China and U.S. Renew Decades-Old Science Cooperation Agreement
In a significant move to strengthen bilateral relations, China and the United States have officially renewed their longstanding science and technology cooperation agreement for an additional five years. The agreement was signed by officials from both governments in Beijing on Friday and will be effective from August 27, 2024, as announced by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
The Agreement Between the United States and China on Cooperation in Science and Technology, initially signed on January 31, 1979, by then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, has been a cornerstone of scientific collaboration between the two nations. This agreement was one of the first intergovernmental accords following the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States, marking a new era of cooperation.
Over the past four decades, the agreement has been renewed approximately every five years, facilitating numerous scientific and technological exchanges and joint initiatives. It has played a pivotal role in fostering collaboration in fields such as environmental protection, health, agriculture, and space exploration.
The recent extension signifies a continued commitment from both countries to work together in addressing global challenges through scientific innovation. Amidst global uncertainties and technological advancements, this cooperation is expected to benefit not only the two nations but also contribute to worldwide scientific progress.
The agreement had previously been extended for six months in August last year and again in February this year, reflecting ongoing negotiations and mutual interests in sustaining the partnership.
The renewal comes at a critical time when global issues such as climate change, pandemics, and technological development require international collaboration. By extending this agreement, China and the United States reaffirm their roles as key players in global science and technology advancement.
