The East African nation of Burundi is strengthening its ties with China, seeking to leverage China’s development experience to boost its own economic growth. Burundian Ambassador to China, Telesphore Irambona, highlighted the burgeoning cooperation between the two countries in sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and energy.

During President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s two visits to China in the past year, a key objective was to gain insights from China’s rapid development. “We are eager to learn from China’s experience,” Ambassador Irambona stated. “China’s journey from a developing country to one of the world’s leading economies is a source of inspiration for us.”

One significant development is China’s zero-tariff treatment for Burundian products, which is expected to significantly enhance the nation’s agricultural production. “This initiative opens new markets for our farmers and boosts our agricultural sector,” said Irambona. “It will help increase income for our rural population and contribute to food security.”

Ambassador Irambona also emphasized Burundi’s attractiveness as a destination for Chinese investors. “With our strategic location in Central Africa, abundant natural resources, and a rich labor force, Burundi offers numerous opportunities,” he noted. “We welcome Chinese businesses to invest in various sectors, including mining, agriculture, and infrastructure development.”

Highlighting the importance of leadership in national development, Irambona praised China’s remarkable achievements. “China’s success is deeply rooted in its excellent leadership,” he said. “We believe that strong leadership is essential for driving progress and fostering international partnerships.”

The ambassador called for increased Chinese investment, expressing confidence that enhanced cooperation would be mutually beneficial. “Our partnership with China is based on mutual respect and shared goals,” he concluded. “Together, we can achieve significant advancements for both our nations.”
