Xi Jinping Calls for Enhanced Dialogue and Cooperation in China-U.S. Relations

In a significant gesture towards improving bilateral ties, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation between China and the United States. In a congratulatory letter sent on Wednesday to the 2024 gala dinner of the U.S.-China Business Council (USCBC), President Xi called for the two nations to choose collaboration over confrontation and to pursue win-win cooperation instead of zero-sum games.

President Xi extended his congratulations to the council and its members, expressing sincere greetings to individuals from all sectors in the United States who have supported business cooperation between the two countries. He highlighted the critical nature of the China-U.S. relationship, stating that it is one of the most important in the world and affects not only the immediate interests of the Chinese and American peoples but also the future and destiny of humanity as a whole.

"The success of one side should be an opportunity rather than a challenge for the other," President Xi remarked. He underscored that both nations stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. Emphasizing China’s readiness to communicate with the United States, he expressed a commitment to expanding cooperation, managing differences, and exploring the right way for the two countries to coexist in the new era, aiming for long-term peaceful coexistence for the benefit of both nations and the world at large.

Economic and trade relations, being a vital component of bilateral ties, were a focal point in President Xi’s message. He noted that the interests of China and the United States are closely intertwined, offering vast room for cooperation. "The two sides should properly handle differences through equal-footed consultation and expand cooperation based on their complementary advantages," he added.

Reiterating China’s dedication to openness, President Xi stated that openness is a key driving force for human civilization and progress, and the only path towards prosperity and development for every country. He highlighted that China will continue to uphold its basic state policy of opening up to the outside world. The nation will keep improving its market-oriented, law-based, and world-class business environment for companies from all countries, including the United States, and will continue to liberalize and facilitate trade and investment.

President Xi also referenced the third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, which adopted a comprehensive plan to further deepen reform and advance Chinese modernization. He expressed confidence that Chinese modernization, with its new achievements, will provide new opportunities for the world.

Concluding his letter, President Xi expressed hope that the USCBC and friends from all sectors will continue to support China-U.S. relations, actively participate in Chinese modernization, and work together to write a new chapter of openness, cooperation, and mutual benefit. This collaboration aims to contribute to the steady, sound, and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.

On the same day, U.S. President Joe Biden also sent a congratulatory letter to the 2024 gala dinner of the USCBC, signaling mutual recognition of the importance of the relationship between the two countries.
