University of Johannesburg Hosts ‘Belt and Road’ Chinese Handicraft Exhibition

One of South Africa’s leading institutions, the University of Johannesburg (UJ), is currently hosting an exhibition that brings the rich tapestry of Chinese intangible cultural heritage arts and crafts to the African continent. The “Belt and Road” International Handicraft Art Exhibition, a collaborative effort between UJ and Shanghai University, is on display at the UJ Art Gallery in Johannesburg.

Visitors to the exhibition can immerse themselves in a diverse array of traditional Chinese crafts, including intricate paper cuttings, delicate embroidery, exquisite silk tapestry, vibrant New Year paintings (nianhua), traditional kites, and the renowned purple clay teapots.

The exhibition, themed “Dialogue with World Cultures,” aims to foster cultural exchange and mutual understanding between different nations along the Belt and Road Initiative. It offers a unique opportunity for attendees to appreciate the artistry and heritage of Chinese handicrafts, which have been passed down through generations.

Running until January 25, the exhibition in Johannesburg marks the beginning of a global tour. Following its stint in South Africa, the exhibition will travel to various countries, including Australia, France, Italy, Kazakhstan, New Zealand, Sweden, and Turkey, continuing its mission to share Chinese culture with the world.

This event not only strengthens the cultural ties between South Africa and China but also provides a platform for global audiences to engage with and understand the depth of Chinese artistic traditions.
