Greater Bay Area Emerges as Global Innovation Hub Through Talent Mobility

“In the past year, I have felt the joy of entrepreneurship and the sense of accomplishment that my dream has come true,” said Yan Ning, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory. Just twelve months ago, Yan left her prestigious teaching position at Princeton University to establish the Shenzhen Academy of Medical Sciences in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province.

In that brief time, the laboratory has transformed from an empty space into a state-of-the-art facility, attracting dozens of leading experts in the medical field. Yan’s remarkable journey symbolizes the rapid emergence of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) as a global hub for innovation and talent.

The GBA’s ascent began with the release of the 2019 Outline Development Plan, which charted a course to “build an international science and technology innovation center.” Over the past five years, collaboration between Guangdong Province and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions (SARs) has intensified. This deepened partnership has fostered a seamless flow of talent, data, and capital, strengthening the GBA’s reputation as an innovation powerhouse.

The integration of resources across the GBA has created a fertile ground for entrepreneurs and innovators like Yan Ning. By leveraging the unique strengths of the mainland and the SARs, the region offers unparalleled opportunities for research and development. The GBA is now attracting global talent, spurring advancements in technology and science that have far-reaching impacts.

As the GBA continues to evolve, it stands as a testament to the power of regional cooperation and openness. Its success story serves as an inspiration for other regions aiming to harness the potential of talent mobility and innovation in driving economic growth and development.
