The Chinese mainland has condemned Lai Ching-te’s recent “stopover” in the United States, labeling it a move to solicit external support for “Taiwan independence.”
At a press briefing on Wednesday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, expressed firm opposition to any official interaction between the U.S. and the Taiwan region, as well as any transit by a leader of the Taiwan region to the U.S. under any name or pretext.
Zhu stated that the separatist stance of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities poses the greatest threat to current cross-strait relations.
She accused the DPP authorities of colluding with external elements to instigate separatist provocations, thereby endangering peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
Zhu urged the DPP authorities to abandon any illusions of seeking “Taiwan independence” by relying on external support or military forces and to cease all separatist actions.
She emphasized that only by returning to the 1992 Consensus, which embodies the one-China principle, can cross-strait relations return to the correct path of peaceful development, ensuring a secure future for Taiwan’s growth and prosperity.
