Chinese shuttlers made a resounding statement at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Player of the Year Awards 2024 held in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, on Monday, clinching six trophies and showcasing their exceptional talent on the world stage.
Shi Yuqi was honored as the Men’s Singles Player of the Year, marking his first year-end award. In a monumental year, Shi ascended to the World No. 1 spot in June, dethroning Denmark’s Viktor Axelsen. Notably, An Se-young of the Republic of Korea secured the Women’s Singles Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year awards, becoming the only athlete to receive two trophies. Her stellar performance throughout the year has solidified her position as one of the sport’s leading figures.
“I didn’t expect I’d receive so much support from other players. I’m delighted to get this award,” An shared. “New BWF Hall of Famer Lee Yong-dae is my idol and he told me, ‘You have so much to celebrate today.’ I’m so happy. I have so many people standing by me supporting me, and they are my biggest motivation.”
