On Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi sent a written message to the Hernán Santa Cruz Dialogue on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights in Hangzhou. In his message, Wang underscored the escalating global tensions and shortcomings in human rights governance, urging the international community to promote human rights through development and cooperation.
Wang, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, emphasized the importance of ensuring equal access to economic, social, and cultural rights for all in today’s complex global landscape. He highlighted the profound transformations the world is undergoing, including intensifying geopolitical conflicts and sluggish economic recovery, which have widened gaps in human rights governance.
“To realize human rights for all, it’s important to uphold true multilateralism, respect countries’ independent choice of human rights development paths, and enhance dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect,” Wang stated.
He also called for strengthened global solidarity and coordination, urging developed countries to increase support to developing nations to ensure that no one is left behind.
Praising China’s own practices in human rights, Wang noted that China is committed to putting people first and has found a path of human rights development that suits its national conditions and aligns with the trends of the times. “Historic achievements have been made in China’s human rights cause, and the protection of economic, social, and cultural rights has reached new heights,” he said.
Wang mentioned the recent third plenary session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China held in July, saying it outlined a blueprint for further comprehensive reforms to advance Chinese modernization. This, he asserted, will provide favorable conditions for the Chinese people to enjoy economic, social, and cultural rights at a higher level.
Concluding his message, Wang affirmed China’s commitment to working with all countries and United Nations agencies to pursue the common values of humanity. He advocated safeguarding human rights through security, promoting human rights with development, and advancing human rights with cooperation. “Together, we can contribute to the sound and sustainable development of the global human rights cause,” he said.
