The 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from December 2 to 13, 2024. Representatives from 197 parties have gathered to address critical issues related to land degradation, desertification, and drought.
China, one of the countries most affected by desertification, has made significant efforts over the years to combat this environmental challenge and promote harmony between humans and nature. At COP16, China has established a special pavilion covering 608 square meters—the largest national-themed pavilion apart from that of the host country. This marks the first time China has showcased its achievements in desertification control and the “Three-North Shelterbelt Program” overseas.
A highlight of China’s efforts is the Saihanba afforestation project. Located where the North China Plain meets the Mongolian Plateau at an average altitude of 1,500 meters, Saihanba was once barren land susceptible to desertification. Over three generations, local residents have dedicated themselves to planting trees, transforming Saihanba into the world’s largest man-made forest. This green miracle now plays a critical role in tackling desertification and land degradation.
China’s commitment at COP16 underscores its dedication to accelerating global efforts in land restoration and enhancing resilience against drought, focusing on sustainable land management and the fight against desertification.
