Tengchong Scientists Forum 2024 Sparks Global Innovation in Yunnan Province

The Tengchong Scientists Forum 2024 commenced on Friday in Tengchong City, nestled in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Drawing over a thousand leading experts from around the globe—including 120 academicians and 59 university deans—the forum has become a beacon for scientific innovation and collaboration.

Under the theme “Science – Global Innovation, and the Mission of Scientists: Empowering High-Quality Development”, the event ignited profound discussions on cutting-edge scientific advancements. Participants delved into topics ranging from biodiversity and modern agriculture to life sciences, health, and the fusion of technology and finance.

This year’s forum boasts an expanded agenda with 11 parallel forums and nine special events. Building upon the successes of previous years, it continues to host dedicated sessions for university deans and young scientists, fostering an environment where seasoned experts and emerging talents can exchange ideas.

Significant moments of the opening ceremony included honoring Prof. Xue Qikun of Tsinghua University and Prof. Xie Xiaoliang, head of the Changping Laboratory, with the Tengchong Science Award 2024. Their contributions exemplify the spirit of innovation that the forum seeks to promote.

The announcement of the Tengchong Scientists Forum development fund, along with a Yunnan provincial fund dedicated to the development of traditional Chinese medicine, marks a pivotal step toward bridging the gap between scientific research and practical application. These funds aim to facilitate technology transfer and commercialization, enhancing the impact of scientific discoveries on society.

Experts at the forum underscored the critical role of innovation in driving development. They highlighted the Tengchong Scientists Forum as a unique platform that connects scientists, educators, and entrepreneurs, fostering collaboration that integrates science, technology, and real-world solutions.

Adding to the forum’s international outlook, events such as the symposium on international intellectual property innovation cooperation in South Asia and Southeast Asia offer opportunities for cross-border collaboration and exchange.

Initiated by esteemed academicians Gu Binglin, Xu Zhihong, and Rao Zhe, the Tengchong Scientists Forum is committed to fostering international cooperation in scientific innovation. Co-hosted by the Yunnan Provincial People’s Government and the China Association for Science and Technology, this year’s event will run until December 8, continuing its mission to inspire and connect the global scientific community.
