Beijing Winter Olympics champion Gu Ailing added another accolade to her illustrious career, clinching the women’s title at the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) Freeski Halfpipe World Cup held in Chongli, Zhangjiakou City, in north China’s Hebei Province on Saturday.
Gu dazzled the audience and judges alike, scoring an impressive 90.00 points in her second run. This victory marks her 16th World Cup win, equaling the all-time record held by French skier Tess Ledeux. Her compatriot, Li Fanghui, showcased remarkable skill as well, finishing as the runner-up with a score of 82.75 points from her first run.
The competition saw both Chinese athletes dominate from the outset. In the qualification round, Gu led the pack of 15 competitors with a stellar 89.50 points in her first run, becoming the only contender to surpass the 85-point mark. Canada’s Amy Fraser secured the second spot with 84.00 points, while Zoe Atkin followed closely with 80.25 points. Li Fanghui secured fourth place in qualifications with 78.00 points in her second run.
Gu’s performance continues her impressive streak from last season, where she triumphed in four out of five World Cup events. Notably, she finished second at Mammoth Mountain after weather conditions led to qualification results being declared final, granting Fraser the win.
The event in Chongli not only highlights Gu Ailing’s exceptional talent but also underscores China’s growing prominence in winter sports. With the support of a home crowd, Gu’s achievement serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes across Asia and the world.
