China Unveils Comprehensive Digital Soil Database

China has taken a significant leap in soil science by unveiling its comprehensive digital soil profile dataset in Beijing on Thursday. This high-precision database covers a vast territory and reflects the nation’s diverse soil resources and quality.

The dataset is a monumental collection, consisting of 25 volumes and over 27.51 million words. It compiles data from more than 63,000 soil profiles across over 2,200 counties nationwide, providing an extensive overview of China’s soil conditions.

A research team combined artificial intelligence, data science, and cartography with traditional soil science methods to develop this dataset. Their innovative approach not only enhances the protection of historical soil survey data but also enriches the understanding of China’s soil resources.

Initiated in 1999, the construction of this dataset marks a long-term commitment to advancing soil science research. Its publication is expected to provide essential data support for various fields, including geosciences, environmental studies, agriculture, and economics, fostering innovative research and development.

The dataset, along with high-precision soil spatiotemporal big data, has already contributed to significant national projects, such as the third national soil survey. Its comprehensive nature makes it an invaluable resource for academics, researchers, business professionals, and anyone interested in China’s environmental and agricultural progress.

This landmark publication was released by the Zhejiang Science and Technology Publishing House, marking a new era in digital soil data accessibility and application.
