After three years with a major internet company in Shenzhen, Zhou Boyan felt it was time for a change. In 2019, he ventured into entrepreneurship, creating an events and design company that aims to bring elements from his native Taiwan to this bustling southern metropolis.
Zhou’s passion lies in transplanting the vibrant night markets of Taiwan to Shenzhen, offering residents a taste of the lively street culture he grew up with. “The night markets are more than just places to shop and eat,” Zhou explains. “They are a reflection of our culture, a gathering place for communities, and I wanted to share that experience here.”
Starting a business in a new environment was not without its challenges. Navigating the nuances of the market and building connections required perseverance. However, Zhou found that life as an entrepreneur allowed him to spread his wings in ways he hadn’t imagined. “It’s been a journey of self-discovery and growth,” he says. “I’ve learned so much about the local culture and business practices.”
Beyond his own success, Zhou is also committed to helping other young people from Taiwan seek opportunities on the mainland. He believes that Shenzhen, with its rapid development and open-minded atmosphere, offers a unique platform for innovation and collaboration. “There are so many possibilities here,” he notes. “I want to help bridge the gap and create opportunities for others to explore and build their dreams.”
