Chinese Mainland Decries Cyberbullying Over ‘Chinese Taipei Team’ Remarks
The Chinese mainland has strongly condemned recent cyberbullying attacks against a delegation of students and teachers from mainland universities who extended congratulations to the “Chinese Taipei team.” The attacks, orchestrated by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities in collusion with certain media outlets and online forces in Taiwan, have sparked widespread anger and disdain among the people in Taiwan.
At a media briefing on Friday, Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, emphasized that the world is home to only one China and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. “While the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have yet to achieve complete reunification, the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China will not change,” Zhu stated, adding that the term “Chinese Taipei team” is entirely appropriate.
Zhu highlighted that the foundation of cross-strait relations lies in the people and that the driving force stems from their shared aspirations. “The achievements of exchanges and cooperation benefit compatriots on both sides of the Strait,” she noted. “We are committed to wholeheartedly promoting initiatives that enhance kinship, well-being, and mutual understanding among compatriots, and we will do so effectively.”
Issuing a stern warning to the DPP authorities, Zhu asserted, “Peace, development, exchange, and cooperation are the shared aspirations of people across the Strait and represent mainstream public opinion in Taiwan. Any attempts to obstruct or undermine cross-strait exchanges and cooperation are doomed to fail.”
The spokesperson’s remarks come amid heightened tensions over the identity and representation of Taiwan in international arenas. The incident underscores the sensitivity surrounding cross-strait relations and the Chinese mainland’s unwavering stance on the “One China” principle.
