China and Japan should work together to promote stable and lasting bilateral relations, and uphold regional and international peace and stability, Wang Yi, China’s top diplomat, said on Wednesday.
Speaking via video at the 20th Beijing-Tokyo Forum, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, emphasized the deep historical ties between the two nations. “China and Japan have an exchange history of more than 2,000 years, and it has been over 50 years since the normalization of diplomatic relations between our countries,” he noted.
Wang highlighted that a China-Japan relationship moving in the right direction is of significant importance not only to both countries and their peoples but also to the peace and development of the region and the world. He called on both sides to be guided by the important consensus reached by their leaders, adhere to the original aspirations of their bilateral relations, and follow the right path towards mutual cooperation.
“We should seek common ground and coordinate actions to promote stable and lasting bilateral relations,” Wang Yi said. He urged both nations to understand the correct positioning of their relationship, stating that China has always regarded Japan as an important cooperation partner. “We hope that Japan can view China’s development objectively and rationally,” he added.
Wang expressed a desire for Japan to work with China to advance strategic, mutually beneficial relations. He emphasized implementing the important consensus that the two countries should be cooperative partners and not pose a threat to each other. “By working together, we can contribute to regional and global peace and stability,” he concluded.
