Huang Ping, the executive vice president of the Institute of Chinese Studies at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), recently shared his insights on the pivotal role that China’s younger generation plays in cultural inheritance and the mutual learning of civilizations. Speaking at a cultural forum, Huang emphasized that young people are not just passive recipients of cultural heritage but active participants in shaping and promoting it.
“They are symbols and representatives of our cultural confidence through their behaviors,” Huang stated, highlighting how the actions and attitudes of the youth reflect the strength and vitality of Chinese culture on the global stage. He pointed out that as the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the younger generation has a unique opportunity and responsibility to foster cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.
Huang underscored the importance of education and exposure to diverse cultures in empowering young people to become ambassadors of Chinese culture. “By engaging with the world while staying rooted in our traditions, our youth can contribute to a richer global dialogue,” he said. He called for more platforms and opportunities that enable young individuals to showcase their talents and share their cultural heritage internationally.
The executive vice president also touched upon the challenges faced by the younger generation in preserving cultural identity amid rapid modernization. He encouraged them to embrace innovation while respecting traditional values. “Our cultural confidence stems from a deep understanding of our history and a commitment to carry it forward in meaningful ways,” Huang concluded.
Huang’s remarks resonate with many educators and cultural leaders who see the empowerment of youth as essential to sustaining and enriching China’s cultural legacy. As young people continue to navigate a complex global environment, their role as custodians and promoters of culture becomes ever more significant.
