China’s Railways Transport Over 4 Billion Passengers in First 11 Months of 2024

China’s railway network has achieved a historic milestone by transporting over 4 billion passengers in the first 11 months of 2024, according to China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. (China Railway). This unprecedented figure marks a significant increase in passenger traffic, highlighting the expanding role of rail transportation in the country.

The modern railway network continues to grow at a remarkable pace. The total railway operating mileage has exceeded 160,000 kilometers, with high-speed railways accounting for over 46,000 kilometers. This extensive network not only facilitates domestic travel but also plays a crucial role in boosting economic development and connectivity across regions.

Over 3,300 railway passenger stations have been constructed and are now operational nationwide, including more than 1,300 high-speed railway stations. These stations have become vital hubs that connect cities and towns, making travel more convenient and accessible for millions of people.

The railway network now covers 99 percent of Chinese cities with populations over 200,000. Furthermore, the high-speed railway network reaches 97 percent of cities with populations exceeding 500,000. This comprehensive coverage ensures that residents across the country have access to efficient and reliable transportation options.

The continuous expansion of the railway infrastructure reflects China’s commitment to enhancing mobility and fostering regional integration. The increased passenger traffic underscores the public’s growing preference for rail travel, attributed to its speed, convenience, and environmental benefits compared to other modes of transportation.

As China advances towards further modernization, the railway system is set to play an even more significant role in connecting people, stimulating economic growth, and promoting sustainable development.
