Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has expressed hope that the incoming U.S. administration will appropriately manage China-U.S. relations, emphasizing stability and cooperation between the two nations. Speaking on Tuesday during a meeting with a delegation led by Susan Elliott, President and CEO of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP), Wang highlighted China’s consistent foreign policy approach.
“China’s foreign policy, including its U.S. policy, has maintained stability and continuity, demonstrating our determination and credibility as a major country,” Wang stated.
He reaffirmed that China intends to improve and develop relations with the United States based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, regardless of changes within the U.S. political landscape.
Wang referenced remarks made by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his recent meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden at the 31st APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, underscoring China’s expectations for the future of Sino-U.S. relations.
“China’s goal of a stable, healthy, and sustainable China-U.S. relationship remains unchanged; our commitment to mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation as principles for handling relations remains unchanged; our position of resolutely safeguarding China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests remains unchanged; and our desire to carry forward the traditional friendship between the Chinese and American peoples remains unchanged,” Wang emphasized.
He pointed out that the future direction of China-U.S. relations depends on the choices made by the U.S. side and expressed hope that the United States will work with China to meet each other halfway.
“The U.S. must not waver in developing steady relations with China,” Wang urged, calling on the U.S. to take steps that stabilize bilateral relations. He emphasized that the U.S. must have the correct strategic perception, acknowledging that China’s development and revitalization are inevitable, and that China has no intention of challenging or replacing the United States.
Wang called for continued dialogue, noting that while dialogue may not solve all problems, it helps promote mutual understanding, avoid miscalculations, and advance cooperation. He also stressed that the U.S. must not cross the bottom lines and red lines in bilateral relations, highlighting that the Taiwan question is an internal affair of China. He urged the U.S. to honor its commitment to the one-China principle and respect the development path chosen by the Chinese people, as well as their legitimate right to development.
Emphasizing the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges, Wang stated, “These exchanges must not be reversed.” He added that China will continue to support and facilitate the exchange of personnel between the two countries and welcomes more U.S. nationals from all walks of life to visit and engage in exchanges in China.
The NCAFP delegation expressed that their organization’s goal is to strengthen U.S.-China relations, seek common ground, and enhance understanding. They noted that U.S.-China relations have been at a crossroads many times in history and that during this period of change for the U.S. administration, it is expected that the two countries will maintain effective communication, continue strategic dialogue, strengthen people-to-people exchanges, and stabilize bilateral ties. Such efforts are of great importance to both countries and the world.
The NCAFP affirmed its commitment to playing a bridging role and working towards the positive development of U.S.-China relations.
